Philippine Fashion Week (PFW) Spring/Summer 2010 on Oct. 31 ended late with designer Cesar Gaupo making his bow and looking diminutive amid all the tall, thin, be-heeled glamazons, sprinting quickly ’round the circular catwalk while waving goodbye at the crowd like the frock-star he is.
Fifteen minutes before, the audience was murmuring like disgruntled patrons of a cinema with a broken projector, clapping (instead of whistling or booing – this is a genteel crowd) to pressure the organizers to start, their displeasure showing in their pinched expressions.
It’s a testament to Mr. Gaupo’s work, good press, and expansive personality that the crowd ready to up and leave after an hour waiting for the show to start, were clapping with sincere appreciation, rather than irritation, at the end of it.
"I’m looking forward to it because he has such a good reputation for exceptional work," my well-dressed seat-mate – a first-timer at PFW – told me at the onset, only to check her watch an hour later and exclaim, "I hope they start already,Tiffany Pendant, [my daughter] still has a party to go to," and at the end of the show,Tiffany Ring sale, "I loved it, he’s really good, the clothes were beautiful."
That’s fashion for you.
Now, the collection looked pretty slick, but it didn’t quite mesh with the gigantic bahay kubo (nipa hut) spotlighted in multicolor (nor the strangely elongated guitar solo and folk music that served as the first act). Sure, the vibe of the production was ’70s boho, but only a few pieces – best exemplified by the flouncy culottes under a blouson top in red georgette chiffon, and an all white chiffon long dress worn by Ria Bolivar at the very end – fit the gypsy muse.
For the most part, you’d feel as though the cast of Gossip Girl has been transplanted into the old set of Lost. And the girls wore these really funky red heels with black straps, or staggering and highly inappropriate blinged heels.
Still, Mr. Gaupo stayed true to making "luxewear" wearable – minus,Tiffany Keys, of course, the puffy ruffled neck of one mustard gazar jacket and a black and ecru crepe dress (why do some women like wearing upright bibs, when men have given all that nonsense up?).
Cutouts, ruffles, peplums, drapes and shawl extensions characterized his collection.
There were a few one-shoulder toga dresses cinched at the waist (these worked well, classy and colorful), some dressy shorts (ruffled shorts makes you go hmm…), a catsuit (for the Kardashian in you) and a body-suit (except for Lady Gaga, I’ve never actually seen anyone wear this in public, but why not?).
The drapes worked with the long dresses (although one wardrobe malfunction was an ill-fitted shoe that got caught in the long trail of ecru jersey fabric); not so much in the catsuit with black metallic tulle (do resist the temptation), or the one-shoulder magenta silk chiffon paired with black stretch pants, or the multi-colored tulle draping (why?) on a black crepe dress, among others.
Of the misses, the worst was an ecru and black silk shantung dress with a ruffled red shantung embellishment attached to the front (it made you look around for the little girl who had her skirt torn off).
Meanwhile, the cut-out dresses for the most part were sleek and sophisticated.
The peplum detail, when used minimally (and not combined with ruffles), were a sassy element.
A gray silk satin shawl dress with matching black jersey bib looked pretty good for something that was shapeless,Tiffany Note on sale, designed to hide the flaws of the body (but show off the shoulders).
As for the ruffles, even an exaggerated neckpiece (a waterfall of fabric froth at the neck) looked good in a ruffled bodice in ecru silk chiffon over black crepe dress.
Also, a ruffled hem tunic in ecru gazar worn with shorts was easy- breezy but still dressy.
Then there were the hybrids – a ruffled shorts/dress under blouson with a draped neck in georgette chiffon, and black crepe shorts/dress – with ecru chiffon ruching that fit the summer chic ideal.

Part of my design aesthetic is to take what’s luxurious and make it wearable, to give it a more ‘accessible’ and ‘versatile’ take – in the sense that it can adapt to different ‘dress-up’ occasions and still look fashionably fresh and relevant," Mr. Gaupo stated.
Okay, he’s convinced us…but I still say stay away from the drapes when wearing stretch pants.
